He that would be greatest among you; Let Him become your servant!

Jesus left the most excellent glory to put on a robe of flesh and be man! () tells us that he humbled Him self and became a servant! He gave up riches to become poor! He gave up the throne to be a servant and so he asked His disciples to do the same! He asked them to give up lofty ambition and to be servants to one another! As they came together, their question was “who will be the greatest in the kingdom?” They had a dispute about it. Possibly Peter spoke up and mentioned the miracles he performed and compared them to those of the others! Maybe they thought one mans wisdom far surpassed another’s and so he would be the greatest. While they compared themselves among themselves, Jesus spoke up and said “He that would be greatest among you; Let Him become your servant!”

Can you see the faces of these men who sought recognition in the kingdom to come? They were being asked to be a servant to the very men who were competitors! Each man who sought the prize of fame was publicly humbled in a race that had barely begun! Like world class runners stopped at the gate, with an order to allow the others to win! “Do not compete with the other runners!” What a contradiction of all we understand? We have been taught “dog eat dog”; if you get in my way, I’ll run over you!

Jesus brought a new kingdom with a new message! He taught that your only opposition is yourself. Run your own race, to be your best, to become all you are called to be. We can look to the right and the left and see runners in both lanes. Some have run ahead and some have fallen behind but the command is still the same! Run the race set before you with patience; preferring your brother ahead of yourself. Run on, in the race against the flesh, laying down the desire to be exalted over one another. Press on into the attitude of service, into the laying down of ambition and pride. Run the race to become more like Jesus who laid aside His glory to become the sacrifice for all men.
